Middlebury College Professor Mark Stefani will discuss how the brain changes throughout the life span and discuss things we can do to can keep our brains alert and useful as the years go by.

Polish potluck and ‘Life in A Jar’ film screening

Irena Sendler rescued 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto in Poland during the Nazi occupation in WWII. Her name and deeds were mostly unsung in America until a group of Kansas teens found out about her story and made a play about it. Jack Mayer, a local doctor and writer, wrote a book (Also called ‘Life in a Jar’) about Irena and also about the teens who wrote about her. We discussed the book last year. This year, in honor of Yom HaShoah--the Jewish day of remembrance of the Holocaust, we will gather to eat a meal of Polish food together and then watch a screening of the DVD that shows the play the teens created.

You are invited to the library for holiday music, cider and cookies, and a special story time for kids! This is a great annual tradition for all ages! And don't forget about the tree lighting that happens right after: we will have the horse drawn hay wagon come pick people up from the library to get to the tree lighting at 5.

Go Solar! December 1 at 6 PM

On Thursday December 1st, join us at the Salisbury Library for an informational session on the new Solar Addison County program. Solar Addison County is finally making it easy and affordable for homeowners and businesses all across Addison County to heat their water with the sun, by helping neighbors go solar, together. Through this program, heating your water with the sun costs the same as heating it with fuel oil or propane, and can even save you money from the start. For all of us who have ever wanted clean, renewable energy, that's made in Vermont, this is a great opportunity.


If you'd like to learn more about how solar hot water technology works, the costs and finances of solar hot water, and see if this could work for you, please join the Salisbury Free Public Library and VPIRG for a public info session on Thursday Dec. 1st. Here are the details:

New program helping Salisbury families go solar

Solar Addison County is an innovative new program that is finally making it easy and affordable for homeowners, farmers, and business owners in Salisbury to heat their water with the sun.

A lot of Vermonters have wanted to go solar for a long time. But until now it’s been hard for folks to figure it out on their own, while prices were out of reach for the majority of families. So VPIRG, the state’s largest consumer and environmental protection non-profit, decided to help by creating a solar co-op for Addison County residents and businesses.

By partnering with Sunward, a Vergennes-based solar hot water company (their systems are made at their Winooski, Vermont factory), VPIRG has brought the cost of solar hot water down to about what Vermonters are already paying to heat their water with fuel oil, propane or electricity. According to Efficiency Vermont, the average family spends more than $600 per year on hot water. Through Solar Addison County, families can now heat their water with solar power for about what they were already spending, while protecting themselves from oil price hikes. And once the system is paid off, hot water costs are dramatically reduced along with pollution.

Since the program was launched in mid-July, the number of solar hot water installations in Addison County has already more than quadrupled (there were only 17 installed in the previous decade; already the program has added more than 60, including 2 in Salisbury). The program will only be running through December 23^rd, when VPIRG will move on to another county.

Join Barry Whitney for a walk and talk in the Salisbury Village Cemetery behind the library. Barry, president of the Salisbury Historical Society, will lead us through the cemetery and tell us some things about the people buried there.

Go Back to School: Take an online class through with Universal Class!

Online Learning Launched @ VT Public Libraries

Beginning this month, we are offering free access to over 500 online classes via Universal Class, a resource made available from Recorded Books, Inc. You can access these classes in the library or from home by using their individual library barcode. The State Department of Libraries used federal funds administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services to pay for the first year of a two-year contract.

Universal Class is an online learning service providing high quality courses for citizens (generally high-school age and older) interested in the lifelong pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons.

Courses cover a wide range - from hobbies (arts and crafts, dog training, photography) to job skills (writing improvement, medical billing, computer programming, domestic violence counseling) to education and test preparation (writing for children, general science, Algebra, Homeschooling Strategies) - and much more!

Each class is self-paced with an instructor who interacts with students. Class curricula include homework assignments and students have up to six months to complete a class.

You are welcome to enroll in up to 5 courses. You have up to 6 months to finish each course. You have access to your course 24/7 via the Internet.

Attend class and do assignments on your schedule. Each course has a real instructor who you may communicate with using email.

These are non-credit courses and are provided for your personal enrichment. These courses are not intended to be a substitute for any state, government, licensing, or educational requirements.

Tuesday from 2:30-3:30 is Kid's Time at the Library!!

Dear Salisbury Parents and Kids,

Did you know your kids can come to the library after school on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30?

On Tuesdays while school is in session, we’ll spend a relaxed, unstructured hour devoted to kids. That's a good time to pick out some new books and read, unwind from school, play games, get help with homework, and make crafts.

Computers are available, also--(written parental permission is required for Internet use, please speak to me if your child wants to use the Internet while at the library without you).

For parents of kids at the Salisbury Community School, you can send a note to school in the morning and the bus driver will drop your kids off at the library. I’ll be there to welcome them.

Pick-up time is 3:30.

Kids of all ages are encouraged to visit the library with their parents at any time when we are open to get books, play in the playroom, and explore what we have to offer.

One hour, six poets, our living room, their words, your ears. (And refreshments!)

Addison County poets (including Jennifer Bates, David Weinstock, Mary Pratt, and Janet Fancher) will read from their work at the Salisbury Library on what promises to be a wonderful summer evening, (regardless of the weather!) The setting is intimate, the words fresh and raw and real, humorous and sad and pointed.

We've had the pleasure of welcoming this group twice before, and I can't wait to be in the audience for the third time. It really is something not to be missed.

2011 State Parks and Historic Sites Passes are here!

We are happy to again offer two passes this summer: one to Vermont's State Parks and the other to state-owned historical sites, including Chimney Point and Mt. Independence, both in Addison County.

Come to the library to sign out a pass--call first (458-0747) to make sure it is available!

You will get free admission (up to 8 people in one car) to the day use areas of the State Parks with the State Parks Pass and free admission to state-owned historic sites with the Historic Sites Pass.

Meet the Author: Jack Mayer, March 24 at 7 PM

Jack Mayer,
author of the compelling book
'Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Story'
will speak at the library
on Thursday, March 24, at 7PM.

Irena Sendler rescued over 2,500 children from the Warsaw ghetto during World War II. Her name was virtually forgotten until some students from a rural school in Kansas uncovered her story and dramatized it for a history project.


'Life in a Jar' is the story of Irena Sendler, and it is also the story of the three students who rediscovered her and brought her legacy to life.
Ultimately, it is the inspiring story of how one person can change the world.

Jack will discuss his book in our living room at the library. Refreshments will be served!

Yoga at the library

We are happy to offer a six-week series of yoga classes at the library!

Olga Pschorr, the instructor, is a longtime yoga practitioner and new teacher certified by the Yoga Center in Amherst, MA. She lives in Leicester, where she is the director of New Leaf Montessori preschool.

The fee for the class is $60 if you sign up for the series of six classes, or $12/class if you prefer to drop in, however, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please speak with the instructor if you would like to take this class but can not come up with the fee.

The class starts on Tuesday, March 8 upstairs in the Old Town Hall/library. It will run from 6:45 until 7:45 PM. If you have a yoga mat, please bring it along! Wear loose comfortable clothes.
